Retreat in Juquitiba
Juquitiba, San Pablo, Brazil
2009

“Shelter” is a term that transcends the architectural design, it provides a sense of retreat and protection rather than the definition of a “house” in its most classical sense. The construction technologies, the materiality and the spaces have been thought to be something light, subtle and ethereal. We thought of the camping house as an analogy: discrete, intimate, minimal construction; where each couple can keep their privacy. The social areas are manifested on the common areas.

TWO COUPLES, TWO UNIVERSES AND THE CAMP ANALOGY.
When naming the typology of these type of projects, we prefer to call them “shelters”. “Shelter” is a term that transcends the architectural design, it provides a sense of retreat and protection rather than the definition of a “house” in its most classical sense.

THE CAMPING HOUSE ANALOGY.
The construction technologies, the materiality and the spaces have been thought to be something light, subtle and ethereal. We thought of the camping house as an analogy: discrete, intimate, minimal construction; where each couple can keep their privacy. The social areas are manifested on the common areas. The program is very simple and and concrete. Each corner of the plan layout are the couple suites, closed spaces, intimate (like camping tents) complemented by the intermediate spaces which become the common gathering areas and kitchen.

EXUBERANT LANDSCAPE.
The Juquitiba site, located on the outskirts of the congested San Pablo, benefits from unique environmental and flora qualities.

INNER RUSTICITY. INCORPORATED ART
For the exterior cladding we proposed corrugated sheets in two versions: smooth for the wall cladding and perforated as sun protection on window openings. The rusticity of the environment is reflected on the interior walls. Natural OSB plates cover the floor, walls and ceiling, except those of the bathroom, in which asbestos-free fiber cement plates are used.
