Square of something is the result of a conversation between MAPA architecture studio and artists Martín Pelenur and Martin Craciun. The starting point of this collaboration began from the common interests in geometry and reflection on the physical capabilities of materials and spaces.

The architecture studio MAPA located in Edificio Panamericano serves as activating point for the project. The intervention proposes a manual job and the repetition of a set of instructions to generate a structure or an interactive set of parts and relationships that affect space.

Like Sol LeWitt explains in Paragraphs on Conceptual Art (Artforum, 1967) “A conceptual form of art means that all the planning and decisions are taken before hand… This idea becomes a machine that makes art.” Lewitt separated the art that was made for the eye of conceptual art (calling this Perceptual). Square of something uses conceptual art strategies to formalize a spatial activation project through the use of premises and instructions.

Premises:
-work with paper structures
-use the square shape and its diagonal
-not cut paper
-not use adhesive.

Square of something took a period of investigation and experimentation on the material in order to obtain a pattern/module, which will become the main structure of the intervention. These modules are made up of folded paper, in which repeated, combined and installed according to pre-established instructions, an effect is created. The instructions leave room for subjectivity during the process, consequently, the intervention contains slight variations. The installation becomes the end product while the form is the medium.

MAPA IN BLANK is an initiative that promotes networking within architecture in order to redraw the disciplinary boundaries and enrich our increasingly complex reality. The agenda proposes 4 annual events where it is planned to explore the opportunity of the unpublished. With the premise of building new things, a process is triggered where dialogue becomes the main tool. MAPA IN BLANK embraces different processes and ideas, what has happened and what is in the making.
